When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, I found myself laid off and with extra time on my hands. I decided to use this opportunity to explore how video games are created—a field that had always intrigued me. My journey began with online platforms like Udemy and GameDevHQ, where I completed several certifications and tutorials. Coming from a non-technical background with no prior experience in coding or software development, I quickly realized the challenges of retaining programming knowledge and reaching a point where I could write code independently.
To overcome these hurdles, I turned to AI tools like GPT and Gemini for assistance whenever I encountered roadblocks. Initially, I felt hesitant and even ashamed to rely on AI, but I soon recognized its value as a learning tool. Leveraging AI allowed me to persist in my studies, deepening my understanding of game development, particularly with Unity and C#. The ability to access real-time insights and solutions has been transformative for me, especially as I navigate personal challenges that can hinder my learning process. AI has become an indispensable resource, and I fully embrace its role in my growth as a developer.
Like many others, I’ve always dreamed of working in game development—a field that once felt intimidating due to its complexity and the incredible artistry and programming skills of industry professionals. While I still feel a sense of awe when I see their work, I am committed to continuing my learning journey and pursuing my passion.
Looking ahead, I plan to work on new projects and expand my skill set. GameDevHQ has recently introduced its first Unreal Engine curriculum, which I find exciting. However, my next steps in education and career development are still uncertain as I navigate my current circumstances. Regardless, I remain determined to keep learning and growing in this field that inspires me.
